The marshmallow spaghetti challenge
Each team builds the tallest possible structure within a limited time… using marshmallows and spaghetti. Your ability to work as a team will make all the difference in this challenge.

Game rules
Here is a game that tests your creativity and ability to work as a team. This game is often used as an icebreaker or to teach students to “cooperate and complete projects.” We will present the game in two approaches.
Marshmallow Level 1
Necessary accessories
For each team:
- 1 pack of marshmallows
- 1 pack of spaghetti
To manage the game:
- 1 stopwatch or alarm
- 1 measuring tape
Teams
Assemble the teams into groups of 4 or 5 people maximum.
Procedure for Approach 1
- Each team has a table with their supply of marshmallows and spaghetti.
- At the start signal, players begin a 20-minute race.
- The goal is to get a marshmallow as high as possible. The height of the highest marshmallow will determine the height of your structure.
Caution:
- At the end of the game time, if the structure collapses, causing the marshmallow to touch the table, the team is eliminated.
- Cutting or eating part of the marshmallow disqualifies the team.
Marshmallow Level 2
Necessary accessories
For each team:
- 1 marshmallow
- 20 spaghetti
- 1 roll of tape
- 1 meter of thin string
- 1 pair of scissors
To manage the game:
- 1 stopwatch or alarm
- 1 measuring tape
The teams
Assemble the teams into groups of 4 or 5 people maximum.
Procedure for Approach 2
- Each team has a table with their supply of spaghetti, tape, one meter of string, a pair of scissors, and one marshmallow (the marshmallow is important !).
- At the start signal, players begin a 20-minute or 30-minute race (your choice).
- The goal is to create a structure on the team’s table that elevates the marshmallow as high as possible.
Caution:
- At the end of the game time, if the structure collapses, causing the marshmallow to touch the table, the team is eliminated.
- Cutting or eating part of the marshmallow disqualifies the team.
