A card game accessible to everyone

The crazy eights

The crazy eights si the source of inspiration for Uno. This game is played by 2 to 5 players. Objective? Exhaust your cards and make sure your opponents have as many as possible.

Game overview

The crazy eights is a well-known card game that, in just a few rounds, can transform a group of friends into a horde of fierce competitors! Armed with nothing more than a standard deck of 54 cards, minus the jokers, players are launched into a thrilling race to get rid of all their cards first. You can use two decks of cards instead of one to make the game smoother and renew the draw pile less often.

Details

  1. Preparation: Each player receives 7 cards. The remaining cards form the draw pile, and the top card of the draw pile is turned over to start the discard pile.
  2. Gameplay: The game begins with the player to the left of the dealer. Players take turns clockwise, playing a card on the discard pile that matches either the color or the value of the top card on the pile.
  3. Special Cards: Some cards have special effects.
    1. Eight: Can be played at any time, regardless of the color or value of the previous card. When a player plays an eight, they can change the color of play to any color they choose.
    2. Two: When a two is played, the next player must draw two additional cards and skip their turn. In some versions of the game, if the next player has a two, they can play it, and the following player must then draw four cards, and so on.
    3. Ten: Playing a ten reverses the direction of play. If the game was moving clockwise, it now moves counterclockwise, and vice versa.
    4. Jack: The jack skips the next player’s turn.
  4. Drawing: If a player cannot or does not want to play a card, they must draw a card from the draw pile.
  5. End of the Round: The round ends when a player has no more cards in their hand. The other players then count the points of the remaining cards in their hands.
  6. Scoring: Number cards count for their face value, face cards count for 10 points, aces count for 1 point, and in some rules, eights can be worth 50 points.
  7. Starting a New Round: A new round begins with the next dealer. The game continues until a player reaches a certain score, usually 500 points, and is then declared the winner.
Remember that specific rules for Crazy Eights can vary depending on the version of the game, so be sure to agree on all rules before starting to play.

Accessories

- 1 or 2 decks of 54 cards
- 1 sheet of paper and 1 pen for keeping score
- For better game comfort, a game mat could be appreciated. The cards slide better on the table.

Scoring

Each player counts the total points of all the remaining cards in their hand. Number cards are worth their face value (e.g., a 2 is worth 2 points, a 7 is worth 7 points, etc.), face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings) are worth 10 points, and Aces are worth 1 point. In some rules, an eight can be worth 50 points. The player who gets rid of all their cards first wins the points corresponding to the sum of the points of the cards remaining in the other players' hands.

End of the game

The rounds continue until a player reaches a certain score, for example, 500 points, and that player is then declared the winner. The target score can be set at the beginning of the game.
