Creation of a collective artwork

The wedding puzzle

All the wedding guests will be invited to draw a part of a collective artwork. This guarantees a unique keepsake for the newlyweds and an original activity for the guests. The Wedding Puzzle is a kind of patchwork painting made up of drawings from all the guests.

Game description

All the wedding guests will reproduce a small part of a photo of the couple using colored pencils. The reassembled image will then be an unforgettable keepsake, a gift from each guest, made with their own hands, and it is sure to be very, very beautiful.

Necessary accessories

- A box of colored pencils for every 6 guests
- As many portions of paper as needed to reproduce the chosen photo of the newlyweds
- An A3 print of a beautiful photo of the newlyweds
- A frame to present the final patchwork to the newlyweds

End of the game

All the guests have finished their drawings. Someone assembles all the pieces (numbers may have been written on the back to facilitate reassembly), by gluing them onto a board.

Procedure for the wedding puzzle

Before the wedding

  1. Identify a beautiful photo of the newlyweds. Ideally, it should be a photo they haven’t yet enlarged but love a lot.
  2. Print this photo on an A3-sized sheet (some stores offer this type of printing).
  3. Clarify the number of guests.
  4. Place the print on a flat, smooth surface that won’t damage the print and isn’t at risk of being damaged by a cutter.
  5. On the back of your print, draw fine pencil lines, without pressing too hard, to divide the photo into as many portions as there are guests. This will create a complete grid of the photo.
  6. Cut the entire photo according to the lines you have drawn. Ensure the cuts are clean.
  7. Now, the goal is to determine the size of the final artwork. You can ask guests to reproduce their portion of the photo at the same size. Alternatively, you can easily enlarge the final result. For example, you can give guests portions of paper twice as large as the photo pieces you distribute to them. Just make sure to plan the frame accordingly.
PS: Prepare more portions to draw than there are guests. Some portions might be less interesting to draw (like a blue sky). Some guests can then draw two portions.

On the wedding day

  1. Place a portion of the photo at each guest’s seat (you decide where).
  2. An activity host explains the idea to the guests.
  3. Within a reasonable time, collect the completed drawings from the guests.
  4. Reassemble the artwork by gluing the drawings onto a board, then frame it.
PS: It’s always possible to reconstruct the patchwork the next day, but it’s less fun. 🙂

Example brief for the guests

An activity host takes the floor to explain the concept to the guests:

Dear family, friends, and guests,

We need your help on this beautiful day to leave a very personal keepsake for the newlyweds. We invite you to participate in an activity called the Wedding Puzzle. Small portions of an image, numbered on the back, have been placed at your seats. These image pieces together form a beautiful photo of our young couple. We will distribute colored pencils and paper to you. We ask that you kindly reproduce the image portion you have been given. Please write the number on the back of your drawing, lightly.

We ask you to do your best, but you don’t need to be an artist. Just do what you can and try to stay true to the photo.

Before dessert, we will collect your drawings and reassemble the final artwork. We hope you enjoy this small creative activity.

A big thank you from the newlyweds!
